Abstract: The oil crisis has given rise to the production of new types of the marine diesel engines with low fuel consumption. Their characteristics are long stroke, reduced number of cylinders and reduced speed. Structural dynamic characteristics of the new engines have not yet been investigated. Therefore, a procedure for lateral vibration analysis of these engines utilizing the finite element method is presented in this paper. For illustration, vibration analysis of a 4 RLA 90 engine located at the afterbody of a bulk/container carrier is performed. Abstract: A method based on the Fokker-Planck equation approach is extended and used to derive an expression for the autocorrelation function of nonlinear rolling motion in random beam seas. Results obtained are in good agreement with previously obtained results using experimental and theoretical approaches.

Abstract: The determination of the required depth of approach channels to harbours is a problem of great concern. Nonetheless, there are no sophisticated design methods. In this paper, a design method is described which overcomes many objections to previous methods. Using a probabilistic approach, spatial and temporal changes of the depth-determining factors can easily be incorporated into the final design. Furthermore, since a probabilistic approach enables the quantification of uncertainties, both the safety level for the use of the channel and the accessibility of the port can directly be related to the channel depth.
