Abstract: The influence and significance of stiffness properties and shear centre on the dry and wet antisymmetric responses of a containership are examined. The ship travels at 26 knots in regular sinusoidal bow waves of unit amplitude. A comparison is included of response predictions derived from unified and rigid body theories since the latter theory excludes all structural properties such as flexural and torsional rigidity or stiffness, warping etc. The results of the investigation provide an excellent justification for adopting a unified dynamic analysis to a flexible ship structure and illustrate the versatility of the theory.

Abstract: This paper examines the importance of roll damping on the gust response of a ship. As a mathematical model an ad hoc roll equation is used and the action of the wind gust is represented by means of a step function. A solution of the equation of motion is developed by using the asymptotic method of Bogoliubov and Mitropolsky [3]. Computational results on the influence of roll damping, initial conditions and the gust magnitude are given for a stern trawler. Results clearly indicate the importance of roll damping. Abstract: The determination of a ship’s directional stability and also the input of valid hydrodynamic data on Ship Handling Simulators, make necessary the estimation of the ship’s hydrodynamic coefficients. A three dimensional potential flow analysis is shown to give reliable predictions of acceleration coefficients for bodies manoeuvring in deep or shallow waters and in canals. This paper presents a set of computed acceleration coefficients for a family of tankers of various principal dimensions but of block coefficient around 0.80. Abstract: In this paper a stochastic model for the effect of Poisson-distributed wind gusts of random amplitude on rolling motion is examined. As a result a majorizing function for the probability of capsizing is obtained and the resulting inequality is also used for a small cargo ship.
