Abstract: A mathematical model is derived by which it is possible to describe the resistance and propulsion properties of ships as a function of the Froude number, the Reynolds number and the general form and propeller parameters. The coefficients of the mathematical model have been calculated for small ships such as trawlers and tugs from random tank data, obtained from the N.S.M.B.-statistics. With the present method it is possible to make an approximation of the resistance and required power which is accurate enough for design purposes. The method is suitable for programming.

Abstract: The nonlinear equations of motion of a ship sailing in regular oblique waves are formulated and an analytical method is developed to obtain an approximate solution for them. The stability of the steady-state solution is investigated by examining the behavior of the solution of the equations of the first variation of the equations of motion. This study shows that the existence of unstable motion is predicted for certain cases if we take account of nonlinearities in the equations of motion. This instability is very sensitive to variations in the nonlinear damping coefficient in roll.
