Abstract: Part I:(1) Design features of the 760 mm. bore turbo-charged engine are given in some detail, this type covering a range from 6,300 to 15,000 b.h.p.(2) An analysis is presented of the dynamic loads acting on the principal running gear bearings, together with stresses in crankshaft journals, torsional vibration characteristics and balancing diagrams for the five- and six-cylinder 760 mm. bore engines.(3) Performance curves derived from shop trial data obtained on British built engines of 6,300 and 7,500 b.h.p. are given.(4) The new design features incorporated in the 850 mm. bore turbo-charged engine covering a range from 12,600 to 25,200 b.h.p. are given, together with rating curves for both engine sizes. Part II:The background for choosing the constant pressure system of pressure-charging is given and some of the design features are examined. The possibilities for improvements of the engine flow characteristics and the construction of the coolers are dealt with. The terminal loading of the piston is considered and plain bearings and contra ball bearings for the turbo-chargers are discussed. A turbo-charger which has been in operation for 27,000 hours is examined. Some possibilities for unconventional installations of the turbo-chargers are proposed. Finally, the development possibilities for the constant pressure-charging system are mentioned.
