Abstract: The analytical calculation of ship bending moments in regular head seas by the linear strip method developed by Korvin-Kroukovsky, applied earlier to the T2-tanker, is now extended to three other hulls differing significantly in shape and operating at a variety of encounter frequencies. A comparison is made of the calculated results with published model test data and with new, more refined, retests. Indications are that trends of longitudinal dynamic bending moment with speed as well as relative magnitudes may be accurately predicted for a fairly wide range of ship forms. Thus the linear theory may be of practical use to the designer. It is recommended that work continue on reducing the remaining discrepancies between theory and experiment, with emphasis placed on experimental aspects: verification of the hydrodynamic coefficients and the basic theoretical assuptions, as well as refinements in experimental measurements of internal forces and moments on models in waves.
