Abstract: There exists a requirement for simple realistic mathematical models for use in ship-manoeuvring simulation studies. McCallum [5] introduced the Force Mathematical Model which suggested a novel way to approach the problem. This communication is concerned with estimating hydrodynamically-generated forces experienced by the hull in a translational motion for use in the modelling process by a physically appealing method. The technique utilizes slender-body theory supplemented by experiments undertaken in a fairly basic wind-tunnel. The procedure, although by no means an exact one, has the advantage of being quite general in application, supplying parameters for mathematical models which can be used effectively in microcomputer-based ship simulation exercises.
