Abstract: The problem of analytical-computational determination of the slamming forces (and resulting structural loads) arising from impacts on the water surface of the flat bottom centerbody surfaces of advanced marine vehicles (such as hullborne SES, SWATH and similar catamaran vessels) in waves is treated in this paper. The basic method of analysis uses the concept of fluid momentum theory, with a three-dimensional model that eliminates the infinite force behavior found by conventional two-dimensional strip theory methods applied to impact problems of flat surfaces. Comparison of theoretical results with model test data for regular sinusoidal head sea conditions shows generally good agreement. A discussion is given concerning the range of values possible in peak slamming load measurements in regular waves, and the contributing reasons for such effects.
