Abstract: The flow surrounding a prismatic planing model is studied experimentally. Measurements of the wisker and the spray blister formed at the intersection of the chines and free surface are discussed. The theory of Epshtein is shown to be in good agreement with the wake depression behind the planing hull. The divergent character of the waves generated by the planing hull is illustrated by amplitude spectra of the wave heights measured along a longitudinal cut. The measurements show the wave pattern resistance coefficient Cwp reduces with increasing Froude number. The ratio of Cwp/CR was found to decrease from 0.32 at Fn = 1.01 to 0.21 at Fn = 1.29.
