Abstract: The design problem for conventional propellers is first re-examined in the context of optimization theory to obtain a clearer understanding of the nature of design variables and their influence on design objectives and constraints. After a brief comparison of alternate methods of design, analytical techniques are reviewed for use in design problems that are best solved using the ‘power’ approach. An improved lifting-line-theory computer program is next presented and a detailed discussion given of how design parameters must either be selected, varied in a systematic fashion, or obtained as output of the design process. The utility of lifting surface theory in finalizing certain design parameters is then reviewed as is the problem of predicting analytically the ‘off-design’ performance of the propeller. Illustrative results are given using a specific design problem already studied by 11 organizations here and abroad.
