Abstract: A feasibility study is described in which springing bending moment response of a 1000-ft, ore ship model was measured in the Robinson Model Basin at Webb Institute of Naval Architecture. Regular waves of length between 6 and 14 inches were generated to excite 1:144-scale model hinged at midships over a range of forward speeds between 1.0 and 4.5 ft./sec. Significant springing was obtained under resonant conditions which corresponded to 39.6 and 19.5 rad./sec., respectively, for each of the connecting beams used. Analytical solution of the model springing phenomenon is also given using Goodman’s theory, and correlation between experimental and theoretical results is shown to be encouraging. The need for more extensive experimental studies is indicated.
