Abstract: Using a principle of superposition it is possible to calculate the new amount of initial stability in cases of smaller variations of displacement in a more simple way than conventionally. The proposed method of calculation is profitable for example in the following cases: Loading or unloading of partial loads or provisions, inclining experiments to establish initial stability, handling of heavy cargo with the ship’s gear, flooding or pumping out of ballast water, conversion of results of flooding calculations. The principle of superposition furthermore enables in the case of a list to ascertain wether a certain change in the amount of displacement gives a righting or a more inclining action to a ship. Finally there are general statements derived about the most successful arrangement of longitudinal bulkheads according to damage stability.
