Abstract: Full scale observations were made on board of 243 Dutch merchant ships from 1959 till 1964. This paper presents the results of the analysis of ship’s environmental conditions and their behaviour and performance at sea. The data on the state of the sea are compared with those collected by other investigators in order to judge their value and to determine their accuracy. This is necessary in view of the further analysis of voluntary speed reduction and course change in different sea conditions and at different ship headings. The reasons reported by nautical officers when taking these measures are also presented. A detailed analysis of the behaviour and performance of the Victory ships at sea is carried out. Theoretical calculations are used to correlate the sustained sea speed with the probability of deck wetness or the probability that slamming occurs.
