Abstract: A simple formula is given to estimate the midship wave bending moment for a wide range of wave lengths. The formula is derived assuming a quasi-static condition and low waves. It is shown that the bending moment is mainly dependent on the shape of the waterline. Comparison with the results of model tests makes it clear that dynamical effects are much more important than the non-linearity of the bending moment as is found in quasi- static calculations for high waves.

Abstract: This contribution is a comparison, based on statistical data, of the relative positions of the Diesel engine and steam turbine. The two methods of propulsion are confronted from the viewpoint of economy and reliability in operation and the resulting problems with respect to power gain by supercharging, improved economy by the use of heavy oil and cutting of overhaul time are presented in detail. The author then gives a concise survey of the M.A.N. range of high-powered engines and a description of a particularly interesting project of a tanker power plant with 4 engines driving a common shaft.
