Abstract: The oil crisis has given rise to the production of new types of the marine diesel engines with low fuel consumption. Their characteristics are long stroke, reduced number of cylinders and reduced speed. Structural dynamic characteristics of the new engines have not yet been investigated. Therefore, a procedure for lateral vibration analysis of these engines utilizing the finite element method is presented in this paper. For illustration, vibration analysis of a 4 RLA 90 engine located at the afterbody of a bulk/container carrier is performed. Efficiency of different types of stays for reduction of the engine vibration is considered. Reliability of the predicted vibration response is estimated comparing the calculated and measured vibration results.
