Abstract: Model tests in irregular head waves were analyzed with special emphasis on the shipping of water by a cargo ship in the full-load condition. Histograms of measured “double amplitudes” of relative bow motion and of measured “amplitudes” of relative bow emergence and relative bow immersion are compared with the Rayleigh density function, and the validity of the distribution hypothesis is tested. The frequency of occurrence of observed bow submergence is compared with the results of the theoretical prediction, for which the bow freeboard is corrected for the static swell-up of the water surface, in accordance with TASAKI. The frequency of occurrence of observed green water impacts is compared with the results of the theoretical prediction, for which the actual bow freeboard is taken into account. The occurrence of impact by green water is found to be strongly related to the time rate of bow submergence. A criterion for allowable wetness severity is suggested.
