Abstract: A method to calculate the scantlings within the ice-belt of ice-going ships is worked out. It is based on plastic theory and the ice-pressure for design purposes is evaluated from the ice-damages of existing ships. A suitable safety against ice-damage is proposed. Longitudinal side framing is dealt with. A thickening of the plating to cover the corrosion and the wear due to ice is included. The novelty of this presentation is that the ice-strengthened parts are designed to stand a certain ice-pressure, and are not dimensioned as an increase in scantlings on a percent basis, which is done in present rules.
