Abstract: In an earlier paper by the present author [1] the generation of liquid motion by a source starting to move horizontally with a uniform velocity slightly below the free surface was considered as an initial value problem. It was found that a steady state of motion would be attained and the elevation of the free surface was obtained in the form of an integral. As the attainment of the steady state and the law of decay of the transient part of the disturbance were the main points in the above article, the steady state integral was not given any close attention. This integral has been carefully examined in the present paper and the results obtained justify the efforts made. Not only all the principal features of the ship waves have been obtained but most of the singularities inherent in Kelvin’s moving pressure point model for a ship have been got around.
