Abstract: The Five Laws of Library Science, proposed by S R Ranganathan, enumerate the operating laws of library science regarding Open Access in library. After the advent of Internet, Open Access has gained huge popularity in the form of open journals and open digital repositories. So, an institutional digital repository (IDR) is a repository where one can store, search, and retrieve digital content anytime, anywhere. This article undertakes a critical evaluation of registered IDRs in OpenDOAR (Directory of Open Access Repository) and total number of IDRs registered in OpenDOAR and the organization which hosts those IDRs. The article also attempts to …learn about the software used by the repository, the subject, the content, languages, size, world ranking, policies, etc., of the IDRs registered in OpenDOAR. For this purpose, 75 websites of IDRs have been surveyed and the succeeding content analysis in respect of subject, language, state, policies, etc., revealed that IDRs of multidisciplinary subjects are registered in large number and nearly all the IDRs are available in English. It is also found that open source software, such as Eprints and DSpace, have been utilized in huge numbers to create IDRs. Abstract: Due to rapid growth of different types of data, scholarly publications, and scientific research, vast amount of data is being produced but managing this data for future use is a huge challenge for libraries and library and information science (LIS) schools and professionals. Thus, there is an urgent need to adopt an effective mechanism or method to collect, store, arrange, preserve, and utilize this data in the future. This article aims to learn the perceptions of the library and information professionals about data curation activities through a survey. The results of the study revealed that the majority of LIS professionals …were working in academic libraries as librarians but are slightly aware about data curation concept from the first year. Most of these LIS professionals are involved in data curation activities due to their job responsibilities but majority of them lack adequate skill sets for the same. The results of the study also disclosed that large numbers of LIS professionals were involved in metadata activities, awareness towards data curation activities which can be developed by adding data curation concept in the curriculum of library and information science courses, and skills regarding data curation activities will be mandatory to the LIS professionals in future. Abstract: The present study investigates the web existence of selected Asian national libraries’ websites on the basis of various web indicators, such as number of web pages, number of in-links, rich content files, publications in Google Scholar, and WISER. The tools used in the study for data collection include Google search engine and Check PageRank. Analysis of data depicts that the rank order based on web impact factor is not very reliable as it is biased towards less number of web pages and in-links. An alternative method, WISER, was used for ranking of the selected Asian national libraries’ websites.

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to analyse the various features and functions of online citation tools with the help of specially designed evaluation checklist and rank them based on features/functions. A structured evaluation checklist contains 90 dichotomous questions (features/functions) and is categorized in nine broad categories. The findings of the study explore different features of online citation tools which reveal that EasyBib online citation tool has the highest score and is ranked ‘high’ among the studied sixteen online citation tools; BibMe, Citation Machine, Cite This For Me, Citation Maker, Bib Builder, CiteFast, and Make Citation are ranked ‘low’ while …the remaining eight Online Citation Tools with ‘very low’ rank. Citation tools under study are lagging behind in exploiting the optimum potential of mobile apps and social networking site features and also lack information guides for effective use of online citation tools. It is hoped that low ranked online citation tools will attend to the lacunae and soon develop fully functional Web 2.0/3.0 features, particularly using mobile technologies, and also meeting the web and citation error challenges to strengthen their vital web-based citations. The findings of the study will not only help the users to understand the features/functions of online citation tools but also help to improve citation competencies and skills in effective use of online citation tools. These findings may also help the developers of the free online citations tools to enhance more features/ services to suit the collaborative user. Show more
