Human Systems Management (HSM) is an interdisciplinary, international, refereed journal. It addresses the need to mentally grasp and to in-form the managerial and societally organizational impact of high technology, i.e., the technology of self-governance and self-management.
The gap or gulf is often vast between the ideas world-class business enterprises and organizations employ and what mainstream business journals address. The latter often contain discussions that practitioners pragmatically refute, a problematic situation also reflected in most business schools’ inadequate curriculæ.
To reverse this trend, HSM attempts to provide education, research and theory commensurate to the needs to today’s world-class, capable business professionals. Namely the journal’s purposefulness is to archive research that actually helps business enterprises and organizations self-develop into prosperously successful human systems.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Despite the obvious importance of emotional labor for employees, organizations, and customers, a lack of coherence and clarity around the construct has impeded its development. OBJECTIVE: Our study aims to provide a comprehensive review of emotional labor spanning about 40 years. METHODS: Our study used a qualitative literature review method along with a theoretically derived path diagram of key emotional labor constructs. We also used meta-analysis to explore the relationship between emotional labor and outcomes in different national contexts. RESULTS: We expect our research to expand the field in five different ways. First, …we review contemporary theoretical conceptualizations of emotional labor and its dimensions. Second, we summarize seven existing measures of emotional labor in light of their contents. Third, we map the theoretical and nomological network of emotional labor about its antecedents, outcomes, moderators, mediators. Fourth, we use meta-analysis to explore the relationship between emotional labor and other variables in different contexts. Finally, we conclude by showing a detailed future research agenda to bring the field forward from different perspectives, including theoretical and empirical advancement. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our review provides a whole picture of where the literature has been and where it should go. Show more

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the effects of the DESI (connectivity, human capital/digital skills, use of internet service by citizens, integration of digital technology and digital public services) on labor market indicators (labor market insecurity, long-term unemployment rate, employment rate, and personal earnings). METHODS: In the study, the 2018 DESI data, the 2018 Better Life Index (job) data and 23 EU countries were analyzed. In the analysis, the SmartPLS 3.0 program was executed with 23 cases and 5000 bootstraps. RESULTS: It was concluded that an increase in the DESI has increased employment rate and personal …earnings, which are positive labor market indicators (t: 15,929; 0,849) and has decreased long-term unemployment rate and labor market insecurity, which are negative labor market indicators (t: 3,685; –0,535). CONCLUSIONS: As a result, digitalization in EU countries for the year 2018 has proved that the labor market indicators were improving. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Productivity is essential for economic development. However, the computation of the total factor productivity (TFP) for research and development (R&D) firms is largely ignored by the previous literature, in particular in the Eastern European countries. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to analyze to what extent the national human capital index (NHCI) influences TFP for a set of 116 Romanian firms, acting in the R&D industry. METHODS: We compute the TFP level using different approaches, by analyzing firm-level data from the period of 2007 to 2016. At the same time, we resort to a …common factor analysis (CFA) to derive the NHCI for Romania. Afterwards we apply a panel data investigation to see the impact of NHCI on TFP and we use several control variables as firm-level financial performances and firm’s size. RESULTS: Our estimation reveals that NHCI, a component of the national intellectual capital index, has a significant but marginal impact on TFP, whereas the financial performances play a more important role in enhancing firms’ productivity. CONCLUSIONS: The national human capital influences the firm productivity in the long run. At the same time, larger companies are financially more stable compared with their smaller counterparts and record a higher TFP. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Knowledge remains a competitive, intangible resource in today’s contemporary organizations. Most knowledge management initiatives aimed at leveraging knowledge for sustainable corporate performance. Knowledge sharing is fundamental to growing intellectual capital. Security on knowledge resources is a prerequisite to quality knowledge content. To increase trust in both knowledge content and security, a knowledge-sharing platform specialist (KsPS) plays a significant role in the overall management and authentication of corporate intellectual capital. OBJECTIVE: This paper analyzes the contributive role of the KsPS and investigates whether or not KsPS matters in strengthening knowledge quality and security in organizations. METHODS: …We conducted a broader review of relevant literature on issues relating to knowledge management, knowledge security, KsPS, and sharing platforms to have a better understanding of roles played by the KsPS. Besides, 18 KsPS from 15 organizations were interviewed through telephone or Skype regarding their role expectations in knowledge sharing, quality, and security in the knowledge management system (KMS). Thematic analysis was done to obtain the relevant themes for the study. RESULTS: The study established that the KsPS provides quality facilitative roles in knowledge-sharing processes for secured KMS. Thus, the KsPS significantly contributes to knowledge codification and internalization. CONCLUSIONS: With very little recognition of the KsPS in the existing KMS literature, this study draws attention to the management of organizations about the need to invest in a KsPS for quality knowledge support services and increased knowledge security. Abstract: BACKGROUND: The rapid development of information technology has changed the interactive behaviors in people’s daily lives. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to investigate as to whether the characteristics of the social network service (SNS) can increase the motivation (antecedent) of the SNS users; and in turn, increase their affection and cognitive (beliefs) towards the SNS; and then increase their purchase behavior (consequence). METHODS: This study uses the antecedent belief consequence (ABC) theory, and collects data from the SNS users in Taiwan, with a total of 188 valid surveys were completed for model testing. …RESULTS: The findings show that: (1) The SNS characteristics (information and service qualities), indeed, have influenced the affection and cognitive of the SNS users, but the system quality can only influence the affection of the SNS users. (2) The purchase behavior of the SNS users have been influenced by the cognitive of the SNS users only, but not by the affection. CONCLUSIONS: The result demonstrates that the beliefs of the SNS users should be considered when the researchers investigate the purchase behavior of the SNS users. This paper also discusses the contribution to the research and the SNS management practice. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Human resource development in sustainability is a prerequisite of enhancing the success of any organization. Education for sustainable development has been recognized as a key process to support employees’ skills development to positively reoriented their behavior to the sustainable development values and principles. In the article context, based on a synthetic literature review for charting the sustainability taxonomy, there has been created a first general inventory of topics needed to be considered for designing a training program in the field. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present paper is to identify the general Qualification Matrix defining the training …program for sustainability management (based on a training needs assessment study). Furthermore, the research will demonstrate how the training program could be tailor for the case of “management position” research variable. METHODS: First method applied in the study include a synthetic literature review for charting the sustainability taxonomy (creation of comprehensive inventory of topics needed to be considered for designing a training program for sustainability management). Second, based on the sustainability taxonomy, a questionnaire was designed and used in a survey for the training needs assessment. The research sample consisted of 207 respondents, potential trainees that are employees of different companies (from Austria, France, Romania and Slovenia), with a balanced structure of management position and distribution of age. Predictive Analytics Software (PASW, developed by IBM, formerly known as SPSS) for statistical processing has been used for statistical data analyses. RESULTS: The study results have indicated that the most appropriate training methods to be used in the sustainability management training program consists in a combination of: “Theoretical knowledge + examples of good practices + exercises + individual projects”. The process of tailoring the sustainability management training program has been demonstrated for the case of “management position” research variable (with three sub-categories of respondents: top managers, middle and low managers and professionals with no management position) and was based on the defined Qualification Matrix (consists of 5 training units and 19 training elements). CONCLUSIONS: The research have valuable contribution in the field of human resources development, particularly by offering a concrete solution in designing and tailoring a training program for sustainability managers started with the training needs assessment and the Qualification Matrix definition. Abstract: BACKGROUND: It is important for decision-makers such as leaders to be aware of employee silence behaviour within organizations. Failure to see this phenomenon tends to reduce the quality of information regarding potential issues in the organizations. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effect of trust in leaders on employee silence behaviour and the mediating role of organizational commitment within this relationship. METHODS: Data were collected from academicians working at private higher education institutions within an Indonesia city. Relying on the social exchange theory, the current study tested the hypotheses through the analysis of partial least square –structural …equation modeling (PLS–SEM). RESULTS: Findings confirmed that trust in leaders positively affects organizational commitment and negatively affects employee silence behaviour. Furthermore, results suggested that organizational commitment fully mediates the link between trust in leaders and employee silence behaviour. CONCLUSIONS: These findings present a valuable contribution for scholars and managers in understanding the mechanism underlying the relationship between trust in leaders and employee silence behaviour, especially in non-profit organizational settings such as higher education institutions in Indonesia. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Competition for positions in higher education institutions cannot be separated from the political approach taken by individuals. Political behavior as a factor in achieving individual career goals in higher education institutions was studied. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the antecedents of political behavior and their effect among leaders in State Islamic Universities in West Java, revealing the interaction between organizational political climate and supervisory political support. METHODS: A systematic sampling method was used, with a sample size of 427 leaders of State Islamic Universities. Data were analyzed by using Hierarchical Regression Analysis (HRA) to …test the hypotheses using STATA 13 software. RESULTS: Results indicated perception of political will was significantly and positively related to political behavior. Organizational political climate also had a significantly moderating effect on the correlation between political will and behavior. Political behavior effect on career success was largely positive, and the relationship between the perception of political behavior and career success was moderated by supervisory political support. CONCLUSIONS: Government support for employee careers could take the form of the promotion of political behavior, strengthened by supervisory political support. Fostering political behavior among employees, by utilizing organizational political climate as an environmental factor would increase both individual and organizational success. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Finding solutions to increase the efficiency of school organizations is needed in Romanian national education system. In this context, a previous general theoretical approach on school as learning organization (SLO) has been developed based on the literature review. Most, the article debates the case of the sport schools (whether they are school sports clubs or schools with integrated sports program) in the context of the pre-university education system. Due to the proximity to performances in competitions and the pressures they exert, this type of schools should be much more willing to collaborate and keen to learn and adapt. Therefore, …it is more likely to develop elements specific to the concept of learning organization. OBJECTIVE: The research aims to establish to what extent certain key-characteristics specific to the integrated model of school as learning organization are identifiable at the level of the sport schools’ organization. METHODS: The research is based on data collected in a diachronic way, from two consecutive school years and from two samples with a total of 471 urban and rural schools, out of which 34 are school sports organizations. The data were collected from 471 external quality audit reports of the schools. Statistical checks using z parameter tests (two-tail) were developed to determine whether the results of each sample are reliable and whether the two samples could be concatenated. RESULTS: At the samples’ level, the minimum levels of incidence of several key-characteristics of SLO’s can be identified, these varying between 55.88% and 85.29% for school sports organizations and between 50.74% and 71.76% for school organizations without a sports program. These results were only for three action-oriented dimensions of the proposed SLO integrated model: “creating and supporting continuous learning opportunities for all staff”, “embedding systems for collecting and exchanging knowledge and learning” and “learning with and from the external environment and larger learning system”. CONCLUSIONS: The research results are related to two management practices regarding “cooperation and collaboration inside and outside school boundaries” and “support that is provided to continuous learning opportunities for all staff”. Thus, the results will be used to provide evidence to support the implementation of the SLO model at Romanian national level and, in the long run, to help increase the schools’ efficiency. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Nowadays most companies look for innovations in managerial training in order to develop among their employees some qualities such as motivation, commitment, creativity, autonomy or the ability to adapt to change and manage intensive pressure. Mindfulness is drawing the attention of a growing number of companies. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to explore how mindfulness can be a tool that helps managers not only to develop their capacities but also to better cope with stress and contribute to great workplace performance. METHOD: 13 managers went through MBSR training and their managerial practices were …evaluated after the training. Data were collected during individual semi-directive qualitative interviews before and after the training of the managers. RESULTS: The results indicate that organizations may reap considerable benefits from training their managers in programs that support the practice of mindfulness in the workplace. The MBSR training generated significant impacts on two major skills that managers have identified: the ability to supervise a team of employees with all that this implies in terms of interpersonal skills and the ability to organize and prioritize their activities. Also, the research methodology sheds light on the innovative nature of mindfulness in a favorable organizational environment. Show more
