Abstract: Total scattering cross section (σ_T) of a PEC cylindrical scatterer is a function of it's scattering amplitude and is closely related to scatterer's cross section. It is difficult to determine σ_T analytically for arbitrary cross sections of scatterer, especially for random cross sections. Defining some bounds on the value of σ_T is therefore very helpful in its estimation. In this paper, σ_T of canonical shaped objects is used to define bounds on σ_T of random cylinder. The geometrical parameters of canonical scatterers are obtained from the geometric parameters of the random cylinder. A formulation is also developed to approximate the value of σ_T from its bounding values. This work therefore, helps to predict the σ_T of a random cylinder from its geometrical parameters, without solving an electromagnetic boundary value problem.
