Abstract: In this paper the cost reduction design of a three-phase line start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPM) due to increasing price of permanent magnet recently. Cost reduction can be effectively achieved by reducing PM material through optimization of the rotor structure using the response surface method. The PM volume was decreased by about 10%, while satisfying basic performance requirements and reducing torque ripple. Prototype machines with two the rotors were built and tested. Experimental results are compared in terms of efficiency, power factor.
