Abstract: Amorphous glass-coated microwires exhibit excellent magnetic properties that make them very suitable to be employed as sensing elements in devices for technological applications. In the present work, we review a few examples. Some applications are based on the magnetostrictive character of Fe based wires that show also bistable magnetic behaviour. It includes magnetic labels or magnetoelastic pens for security applications. In the case of non-magnetostrictive wires, and based on the giant magnetoimpedance effect, they can be employed as tips in spin polarized magnetometry or as stress sensors. Most recently, a new family of microwires has been introduced, multilayered microwires, which offer quite interesting properties and can be employed as sensing elements in multifunctional sensor devices.
