Abstract: Intelligent electronics, which refers to the miniature programmable chips with the memory and logic capability of a computer, will have a profound impact on business operations in the years ahead. An example of this technology is the microprocessor, the computer-on-a-chip which, in a very short time, has greatly altered several well-established markets. While many business opportunities will be created, it will become increasingly important for business to examine the larger social issues related to a technological advance of this magnitude. Steps must be taken to assure that the technology is used to produce useful products providing real benefits to society. Similarly, the impact of this technology on the workforce must be examined, with care taken to understand the possible problem of worker dislocation. There are several examples of industry/government efforts aimed at addressing these important social issues underway in Europe and Japan. The business community as a whole would be advised to develop programs and strategies required to help people adapt to technological change in an increasingly information-oriented society.
