Abstract: This paper presents a method and a tool for solving the reliability-based design optimization (RBDO). The RBDO aims to minimize a cost function by changing the value of design parameters while ensuring a level of reliability. Uncertainties propagation is a key concept in reliable studies and it can be associated with a sensitivity analysis in order to sort parameter influences. Global and local sensitivities are compared in this study in order to keep a reasonable cost …versus accuracy ratio. A software tool has been also developed to automate reliable studies. It is applied to the reliable optimization of a magnetic nano switch with SQP algorithm using Jacobian calculated by composition of automatic and symbolic differentiation. Show more

Abstract: Fuel consumption of a hybrid electrical vehicle (HEV) depends on the driving cycle (i.e. the use of the vehicle), on the powertrain components and on the energy management. The paper proposes an optimal component sizing process taking into account the entire system. An optimal energy management is used in order to minimize the fuel consumption on a driving cycle. This optimization approach of the HEV uses Radial Basis Function models which allow a fast constrained optimization.

Abstract: This paper proposes a maximum power point (MPP) tracking algorithm based on neural networks to correctly track the MPP even under abrupt changes in solar irradiance and to improve the dynamic performance across the dc capacitor utilized in the power converter that serves as an interphase to connect photovoltaic power plants into the ac grid. Traditional maximum power point tracking algorithms such as "perturb and observe" (P&O) and "incremental conductance" (IC) are able to track the …point of maximum power in most cases. However, they can fail under rapid changing atmospheric conditions. Furthermore, in architectures with a power converter operated at variable dc-link, P&O and IC-based algorithms provide a step-like voltage reference which translates into a repetitive overshoot across the dc capacitor. This may negatively affect the lifespan of the capacitor and affect the overall dynamic of the system. This paper develops a neural network (NN) algorithm that overcome the aforementioned issues, including thorough modelling and control of the various components involved in the realization of a grid-connected photovoltaic power plant. The approach is validated via detailed computer simulations on experimental data. Show more

Abstract: Many attempts have been made to extend Particle Swarm Optimization to solve Multiobjective Problems. In this paper, the Strength Pareto concept, proposed by Zitzler, is incorporated to a Particle Swarm Optimization to build a new approach to solve Multiobjective Optimization Problems, the Multiobjective Strength Pareto Particle Swarm Optimization. Numerical results are reported to validate the proposed method to solve some unconstrained benchmarks problems and a constrained design of a brushless direct current …motor. Show more

Abstract: When modeling a system subject to uncertainties, a fundamental aspect is the stochastic modeling of the input parameters of the model. Several calculation and analysis steps have to be considered, and can be found in the literature. In this paper, after presenting such steps, these are applied for the modeling of the variability of the magnetic behavior law related to a set of slinky stator samples, issued from the same production chain. The probabilistic model of …the parameters is therefore validated using a statistical test and a classical Monte Carlo simulation. The importance of taking account of the dependency structure between the parameters is then emphasized, as it may modify significantly the results related to the validation of the model. Show more

Abstract: Design optimization of antennas is challenging, in most cases it involves electromagnetic (EM) simulations. High-fidelity simulation is computationally expensive and, therefore, employing EM solver in an optimization loop may be prohibitive. In this paper, we discuss optimization approaches that exploit coarse-discretization EM simulations as a low-fidelity model, and allow us to locate the optimum design of the antenna at a low computational cost. Some practical issues, including the importance and selection of …the model fidelity are also discussed. Show more

Abstract: The paper proposes an optimization procedure suited to design the shape and the current feed of active coils. A suitable spline-based basis is used for the coil geometry modeling, based on a rather limited number of optimization parameters. In order to simplify the constraints treatment, a set of knot points are introduced, linked with the design degrees of freedom.
