Abstract: We propose an application of the PML absorbing boundary condition to a noncubic cell time-domain method using prism cells for 3-D full-wave analysis. To verify that the noncubic cell time-domain method can accurately simulate pulse propagation on microstrip waveguide terminated by applying the PML absorbing boundary conditions, we extracted S-parameter from a simulation of pulse propagation on a right-angled bend discontinuity. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to propose a global minimization algorithm belonging to the class of Controlled Random Search algorithms, to interface with the Finite Element analysis procedure for optimizing the design of Buried Permanent Magnet Synchronous motors and Synchronous Reluctance motors. The behavior of the proposed algorithm has been compared, in terms of attainable optimum and computation time, with the one of a minimization procedure available at commercial software. This comparison has shown a …significant more efficiency of the considered algorithm especially in the more complex designing of a Synchronous Reluctance motor. The goodness of the results achieved with the proposed algorithm shows that combining the FE analysis with a suitable strategy is an effective and powerful tool for the design optimization of electric motors. Abstract: A one-dimensional analytical model is developed from the three-dimensional equations of linear piezoelectricity for Rosen piezoelectric transformers operating with extensional vibration modes of non-uniform piezoelectric ceramic rods for generating high electric voltages. Free and forced vibration analyses are performed. Vibration frequencies and mode shapes are obtained showing the mechanism of Rosen transformers. Nodal point of the operating mode is determined for the purpose of mounting. The transforming ratio, input impedance, and the …efficiency of Rosen transformers and their dependence on various parameters are examined. Abstract: A high frequency electromagnetic field (HFEMF) that is applied to the surface of a molten metal is able to generate a Lorentz force on the surface of the molten metal. This force can be used to seal the molten metal leakage without contact, which makes the quality of metal products purer and the seal system used perform longer. To make this technique possible, it is required to analyze the surface shape and the surface instability when HFEMF is …applied to the molten metal surface. It is known from experiment with various kinds of molten metal that the fluctuation of the surface occurs under the applied HFEMF. This fluctuation becomes stronger as the HFEMF is increased. The fluctuation is strongly connected to the instability criteria of the surface. This research has been carried out to make it clear how the HFEMF causes the surface fluctuation of the molten metal, and how it determines the surface shape and stability region. Abstract: We investigate the singular stress and electric fields in an orthotropic, nonhomogeneous piezoelectric ceramic strip containing a Griffith crack under longitudinal shear. Abstract: The effect of a silicone sheathing on the static and dynamic magnetoelastic properties of an amorphous ferromagnetic ribbon were experimentally investigated and some simple modelling of the detected behaviour are reported. Since silicone sheath and ferromagnetic ribbon do not form alloy, it is shown that internal friction between the two component has a determining role. In the presence of static friction, magnetisation and magnetoelastic wave amplitude are prevented by the silicone sheath; but after a threshold …values of the magnetising field a dump occurs towards more easy magnetisation or higher amplitude of oscillations (in resonance condition), respectively. The magnetisation curve represents a step by crossing the threshold magnetising field value; this step is very flat so that it can be used for sensors of a little magnetic field change or as switch activated by little magnetic field input. For what concerns the application of this two component material as resonator core it can be deduced that, also when a silicone sheath is present, the amplitude of resonant magnetoelastic wave is a good detector of stress, strain or local magnetic field; so that the application of magnetoelastic resonators made by amorphous ribbon core may be expanded to the cases which require a protection covering, as for example when it is necessary to work in water or in the human body. Abstract: The coupled electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical simulation for induction heating of railroad wheel is described. The developed mathematical models, numerical algorithms and software are intended for finite element analysis of interactive electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical processes in treated wheels. Abstract: This paper presents a method of micro-vibration control of milling machine heads by use of a vibration absorber. The principle used in this paper is different from that of usual absorbers. An auto-tuning vibration absorber is presented in which the absorber creates anti-resonance state. When the anti-resonance is used, the damping has to be significantly small, so it is difficult to suppress higher modal vibrations. In order to suppress higher modes, an auto-tuning magnetic damper is …used. It damps higher modal vibrations, but it also increases the principal vibration. Then a method of optimal auto-tuning control is presented in which both principal and higher modal vibrations are suppressed.
