Human Systems Management (HSM) is an interdisciplinary, international, refereed journal. It addresses the need to mentally grasp and to in-form the managerial and societally organizational impact of high technology, i.e., the technology of self-governance and self-management.
The gap or gulf is often vast between the ideas world-class business enterprises and organizations employ and what mainstream business journals address. The latter often contain discussions that practitioners pragmatically refute, a problematic situation also reflected in most business schools’ inadequate curriculæ.
To reverse this trend, HSM attempts to provide education, research and theory commensurate to the needs to today’s world-class, capable business professionals. Namely the journal’s purposefulness is to archive research that actually helps business enterprises and organizations self-develop into prosperously successful human systems.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: In the current post-pandemic context, the main characteristics of workplaces have changed radically. Among the most prominent aspects of the post-pandemic workplace are hybrid arrangements, wide-spread remote work as the main work arrangement and increasing automation and robotization. These changes pose major concerns in terms of workplace wellness and occupational health and safety, primarily due to emerging or insufficiently analyzed risks in the workplace. OBJECTIVE: Especially in the post-pandemic world, where emerging risks in the workplace add to the pre-existing organizational challenges, the key to preventive and proactive organizational behavior is integration of ergonomics in …current work environments, irrespective of the type of work arrangement (remote, in office, manufacturing plants, etc.). Starting from this idea, the authors aimed to create an intervention model and to support the decision-making process to ensure successful implementation of ergonomic interventions. METHODS: The article presents a new perspective on workplace risk management and enhancement of workplace wellbeing based on a framework that encompasses workplace risk assessment, proposal of ergonomic interventions, and the managerial and financial evaluation of the proposed interventions. RESULTS: A key contribution to the literature in the field is represented by case studies on two companies, where cost-benefit analysis (CBA) was performed to assess validity of the proposed framework. CONCLUSIONS: The paper is a valuable contribution to the literature in the field of ergonomic interventions due to the innovative approach proposed by the authors. Abstract: BACKGROUND: The progress made in wireless communications has led to a higher adoption of mobile devices among users and has spurred the development of mobile commerce technology. OBJECTIVE: This research examines the factors influencing the intention to adopt mobile commerce in Jordan. These factors include perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, trust, social influence, personal innovation, and mobility. METHODS: The study relied on Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), incorporating additional variables to suit the Jordanian context. The researchers gathered data from 540 users, and the research hypotheses were evaluated using smartPLS analysis. The study utilized a convenience …sample due to the absence of a comprehensive list of names of mobile commerce users. RESULTS: The results reveal that perceived usefulness, trust, social influence, personal innovation, and mobility play a significant role in influencing adoption intentions of mobile commerce. Furthermore, the study finds that mobility significantly affects the perceived usefulness of mobile commerce. In contrast, perceived ease of use does not show a statistically significant relationship on the intention to adopt mobile commerce. CONCLUSIONS: The outcomes of this research provide valuable insights for companies, service developers, and mobile marketers, enabling them to enhance the adoption rate of this service among individuals. Abstract: BACKGROUND: This extensive analysis examines the changing environment of AI in education using 1,480 Web of Science research publications. The goal is to map the academic landscape, highlight significant topics, and identify notable authors, nations, and documents to enable future study in this expanding subject. OBJECTIVE: The study seeks to explore AI’s influence on education and identify patterns and insights that might inform future research. METHODS: Bibliometric and content analytics are used to carefully extract data from the Web of Science Core Collection. To ensure completeness and relevance, 1,480 peer-reviewed papers from 2008 to 2023 were …selected. RESULTS: The study identified six research clusters: AI Ethics and Innovation, Teaching Systems, Learning Experiences, Education Performance Enhancement via AI, Sustainable Development Goals in Education, and AI, Big Data, and Education. With the help of 107 universities, 310 keywords, and 160 authors from 37 different countries, these clusters are thriving islands in their respective fields. IMPLICATIONS: This study helps researchers, educators, and policymakers explore the literature and identify prospective research areas. It allows stakeholders to lead AI in education towards a more inclusive and enlightened future. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Many recent studies have proposed that leadership behaviors are attached to social exchange processes that influence not only their followers but also leaders themselves. Existing research has not adequately addressed how ambidextrous leadership affects the leaders themselves. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the extent to which ambidextrous leadership has benefits and costs for leaders’ work engagement. Additionally, it attempts to explore the moderating role of leaders’ emotional intelligence in the conceptual model. METHODS: Data were collected from a two-phase online survey of 153 managers in China. We tested our conceptual model using path analysis …and bootstrapping methods based on Mplus. RESULTS: Results show that ambidextrous leadership is positively associated with leaders’ positive affect. Moreover, ambidextrous leadership has a positive indirect effect on leaders’ work engagement through positive affect. However, ambidextrous leadership also has devastating effects on leaders’ work engagement through ego depletion for leaders with low levels of emotional intelligence. CONCLUSIONS: Drawing on COR theory, we demonstrate that ambidextrous leadership can act as a double-edged sword for leaders. Specifically, ambidextrous leadership may cause different behavioral responses (promoting vs. inhibiting work engagement) via two distinct pathways (positive affect vs. ego depletion). Meanwhile, the extent to which this dark side appears depends on the characteristics of the manager. By integrating both the negative and positive sides of ambidextrous leadership, we hope the present paper sparks future research on the impact of leaders on themselves. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Human Resource Management (HRM) has emerged as a crucial facet of organizational success, particularly in balancing profitability and environmental sustainability. The growing environmental concerns are reshaping HRM, giving rise to Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) practices. However, there is a critical need to understand the evolution and impact of GHRM. OBJECTIVE: This literature review explores the role of GHRM in fostering sustainable practices, employee well-being, and engagement within organizations. It aims to provide the groundwork for future research. METHODS: This study examined 204 selected journal articles from Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar following …PRISMA guidelines. The article underwent rigorous screening, data extraction, and analysis using NVivo 14 software. RESULTS: The literature review explored the theoretical underpinnings of GHRM practices. Scoping review provided insights into the depth of available literature, mapping revealed research gaps and thematic clusters. However, systematic review highlights GHRM’s role in organisational sustainability and employee well-being. CONCLUSIONS: GHRM emerges as a crucial factor in fostering environmental capabilities and steering the transition from traditional HR practices to eco-friendly approaches, paving the way for new paradigms. Moreover, practitioners must extend their considerations beyond routine organizational HR practices to enhance sustainable HR practices and employees’ well-being. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Although hybrid work has been a topic of research for many years, the pandemic has introduced a new context that remains relatively unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to define hybrid working as a novel flexible working arrangement and investigate the factors that influence its effective implementation within organisations. METHODS: To achieve this research objective, we conducted a single case study focusing on Mars Wrigley Poland. The study involved interviews with the People & Organization Director of the company and an analysis of internal documents developed during the implementation of hybrid working. RESULTS: Our …findings show that hybrid working is a team-managed flexible working arrangement, and it is within the teams that the specifics of the hybrid work should be determined and defined. Additionally, the findings reveal that hybrid working is not a one-size-fits-all model. It requires a holistic approach to establish a clear strategy that encompasses various factors such as culture, technology, and employee experience. Of particular importance is the need to ensure connection in the broader sense and ongoing support to employees. CONCLUSIONS: Managers can significantly improve the success rate of hybrid working by gaining insight into the key factors that facilitate the implementation of the hybrid model. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Women entrepreneurship holds a fundamental role in uplifting economies, by providing job opportunities, driving innovations, and alleviating poverty. This study focuses women entrepreneurial intentions in Balochistan Pakistan, where extreme poverty and limited women participation exist. Despite women’s informal, unregistered, and unrecognized status, they possess the potential for productivity and can play a vibrant role in economic activities. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the impact of microfinancing, risk, and opportunities on women entrepreneurial intentions in Balochistan, Pakistan. Therefore, it seeks to explore the mediating and moderating effects of opportunities and risk attitudes. The emphasis is on identifying …women entrepreneurs who are risk-takers, planning to initiate businesses, and require initial funds. METHODS: This is an exploratory and descriptive study; based on primary data collection through survey from 280 women entrepreneurs in district Quetta of Balochistan, Pakistan. Snowball sampling was employed for cross-sectional data gathering, and empirically analyzed by PLS-SEM. RESULTS: The results exhibited positive and significant roles of microfinancing, opportunities, and risk attitudes in influencing women’s entrepreneurial intentions. The findings revealed the absence of financial assistance, which is the primary barrier for business startups and expansions. CONCLUSIONS: Findings recommend microfinancing stimulate women entrepreneurial activities; enhance risk-taking ability to explore more business opportunities. Microfinance institutions (MFIs) are advised to formulate improved strategies tailored for women’s entrepreneurial development in Balochistan, Pakistan. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: With Big Resignations on and the job hopping trend difficult to stop, HR needs to arrive at a less frustrating and more relevant approach that can curtail employee turnover in the first place and arrive at a mutually beneficial approach for both parties in case they decide to depart. The turnover intentions of employees are an outcome of uncertainty at work, toxic work culture, lack of appropriate work-life balance, stagnation in career, lack of mental well-being or improper monetary compensation. It also is influenced by the work experience of employees within the organization and trust at the workplace. When …an employee decides to quit, he is already mentally gone, here it becomes even more critical to ensure that they stay relatively engaged during the transition so as to ensure effective knowledge transfer. Within the given context, what should be the duration of a notice period? How can organizations ensure a win- win approach for both employer and employee so as to ensure effective knowledge transfer? The paper is an attempt towards exploring this aspect further so as to arrive at a mutually beneficial approach both from the employer and employee perspective. OBJECTIVE: With an objective to review the ‘process and mindset’ which are often counterproductive when an employee responds to dissatisfaction at work, the paper aims to look at the ideal duration of a notice period and the context in which it works best. METHODOLOGY: Based on a mini thematic review and using a qualitative approach, the paper explores the current trends, challenges and implications of big resignations to HR as well the problems associated with the different duration of a notice period. An empirical attestation of the study can further validate the feasibility of a notice period that varies across jobs, organizations, industry and levels. It can further be validated empirically the impact of “open discussions about career transitions and job opportunities as less taboo” at workplace on employee engagement of people while on notice period as well employee retention in organizations. RESULTS: Employees need to be engaged even during their notice period, which may be possible only by ensuring a culture that promotes honest and open dialogues between employer and employee without any fear of reprisal when they are vocal about being unhappy in their jobs. An ideal notice need not be a ninety days, two months or two weeks period but has to vary across jobs, organizations and industry depending on the experience; job role; seniority; technicality; industry; availability of a person ready to take charge; or even period of employment of the leaving employee with the organization. The notice period works best i.e. ensures effective knowledge transfer within a workplace setting where job prospects or career transitions are considered less taboo and where the different reactions to dissatisfaction at work (EVLN) are handled through a ‘culture of open communication’, problem solving through ‘Happy, Present, Engaged’ conversations, “Training towards receiving & giving feedback and a ‘smooth transition’ in case the employee decides to quit. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Numerous models of the so called ‘change curve’ exist, yet there is a paucity of scholarly inquiry regarding empirical substantiation, practical implementation, and general applicability. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the change curve, aiming to examine whether and how the various phases of the curve manifest in a business context, thus assessing their relevance, which represents a novel approach. METHODS: The analysis, employing a mixed-methods approach of qualitative and quantitative elements, is inductive and interpretative, focusing on exploring and understanding the complexity of the cases. Data collection of this exploratory research was conducted utilizing a multi-faceted …approach that included online surveys, semi-structured interviews, on-site observations through Gemba Walks. RESULTS: A pivotal discovery arises from the validation of the four phases of the change curve. Irrespective of disparate project contexts, individuals manifest akin responses within their respective phases of the change curve, amenable to effective facilitation through judicious interventions. These interventions, derived and systematized from empirical case studies for the first time, underscore their potential utility in guiding individuals through the change process. CONCLUSIONS: The validation of the four phases and their pragmatic utility warrant further exploration in subsequent scholarly inquiries, aiming to ascertain their robustness across diverse organizational contexts. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Ensuring medical quality and safety is the perpetual focus of healthcare management. Hospitals must prioritize quality management for sustainable growth. However, the complexity of quality management in hospitals, coupled with evolving practices, presents challenges. Achieving the integration of economic, environmental, and social benefits for high-quality development remains difficult. While quality management practices are acknowledged as strategic tools, their impact on job satisfaction, competitive advantage, and sustainable performance is not yet fully understood. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research was to empirically demonstrate the relationship between quality management practices, job satisfaction, competitive advantage, and sustainable performance. …METHODS: The study uses a quantitative research method. A questionnaire survey was conducted in Guangxi, China, among 171 quality management executives in secondary and tertiary hospitals, and the proposed research model was validated using PLS-SEM. RESULTS: The results showed that quality management practices have positive direct and indirect effects on sustainable performance, confirming the partial mediating role of job satisfaction, and competitive advantage in the relationship between quality management practices and sustainable performance. CONCLUSIONS: This study addresses a gap in quality management literature by exploring the relationship between quality management practices, job satisfaction, competitive advantage, and sustainable performance. Findings reveal that higher implementation of quality management practices correlates with increased job satisfaction, stronger competitive advantage, and enhanced sustainable performance in hospitals. These results suggest that implementing quality management practices can boost job satisfaction, enhance competitive advantage, and promote sustainable performance, offering valuable insights for hospital leaders.
