Human Systems Management (HSM) is an interdisciplinary, international, refereed journal. It addresses the need to mentally grasp and to in-form the managerial and societally organizational impact of high technology, i.e., the technology of self-governance and self-management.
The gap or gulf is often vast between the ideas world-class business enterprises and organizations employ and what mainstream business journals address. The latter often contain discussions that practitioners pragmatically refute, a problematic situation also reflected in most business schools’ inadequate curriculæ.
To reverse this trend, HSM attempts to provide education, research and theory commensurate to the needs to today’s world-class, capable business professionals. Namely the journal’s purposefulness is to archive research that actually helps business enterprises and organizations self-develop into prosperously successful human systems.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: In recent years, crowdfunding platforms have gained importance in the financing industry. An emerging issue is that only a fraction of investors decide to reinvest after the initial investment experience. One key factor that might be responsible for low reinvest rates, which ultimately results in lower crowdfunding success and unsustainable crowdfunding platforms, is dissatisfaction. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to shed light on the repercussions of dissatisfying investment experiences. First, the authors investigate to what degree individuals’ dissatisfaction with a crowdfunding platform’s founders has a direct negative impact on their decision to continue investing on the platform. Second, …this study examines whether the emergence of individuals’ distrust in a platform’s founders is a consequence of dissatisfaction and how this influences their decision to reinvest in projects on the platform. METHODS: The authors develop a modified version of the extended valence framework (cf., Kim et al. [1 ]) to investigate the relationships among dissatisfaction, distrust, perceived benefit, perceived risk, and intention to continue investing. The research model was analyzed using a partial least square analysis approach based on a sample of 233 respondent that participated in an online questionnaire. RESULTS: Our findings show that dissatisfaction, directly and indirectly, affects individuals’ intention to continue investing. Distrust is found to be an essential mediator between dissatisfaction and intention to continue investing. Furthermore, the effect of distrust on backers’ intention to reinvest is fully mediated by perceived benefit and risk, which are both found to be important determinants of their intention to reinvest, while perceived benefit exhibits a stronger absolute effect. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides significant contributions to the related literature. It explains why platforms might suffer from low reinvestment rates. Furthermore, it sheds light on the crucial role of distrust in the crowdfunding context. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown different ways how managers can influence job satisfaction of employees, mostly in form of external factors. We found that there is little research regarding organizational values and their influence on job satisfaction of employees. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research was therefore to identify if there is a statistically significant influence on job satisfaction from organizational values. METHODS: The article is based on a quantitative approach where we have performed a survey among employees in a selected sector. In the questionnaire we asked respondents to evaluate what kind of organizational values …the organization they work for does promote, later we asked respondents to evaluate what influences their job satisfaction, and in the final part we have collected demographical data. RESULTS: The results show a weak, but still detectable, positive correlation between organizational values and job satisfaction of employees with regard to work itself. Additionally, we have found a positive correlation between organizational value innovation and satisfaction with working conditions. CONCLUSIONS: There is an influence of organizational values on job satisfaction of employees with regard to job satisfaction with work itself. This indicated that employees feel the influence of promoted organizational values and that it does influence their job satisfaction. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Non-public higher schools have developed dynamically since the transformative changes of 1989 and now play a remarkable role in the Polish educational market. However, the public schools are considered to be more prestigious. A study on the organizational culture of the two types of institutions should provide more insight into the nature of their effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to present differences between public and non-public higher education institutions in Poland with regard to their organizational culture. METHODS: A synthetic review of the literature on organizational culture was conducted and presented. Research …in the form of a survey based on Cameron and Quinn’s model was conducted in eight universities in Poland. A sample of opinions of 186 workers was gathered and analyzed. RESULTS: In Poland public universities have a predominantly hierarchical culture while their non-public counterparts function in a less hierarchical market culture. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that it may be necessary to use different management systems in the two types of institutions. A further, more comprehensive research into the subject will be worth conducting. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Preparing underprivileged students to become human capital is a challenge. Issues relating to motivation and behavior are often cited as a roadblock for the quality of their learning and development. OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of this study is to develop a construct for future design and improvement to ensure successful human capital development for underprivileged students. The proposed construct is derived from the case study with Bangkok Metropolitan Administration since 2016. METHODS: Observation and interviews, through the use of Big Data represent the key tasks in the study’s methodology. Comparing the findings with previous studies …helped to verify the study’s credibility. RESULTS: Improvements (e.g., recognition and behavior) in science experiment and education, through the focus on ecology and environment have been successful due to empathy, trust, psychological safety, participation, sense of belongingness, pride, and financial incentive (from the sales of product developed from science experiment). CONCLUSION: The construct for human capital development helps visualize the interrelationship among these factors. More importantly, recognizing the extreme value in student demographics when engaging with underprivileged students is essential for design and improvement. Finally, additional tasks are recommended to help generalize and extend this construct. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Knowledge remains an essential intangible resource for competitive advantage in organizations. In the context of knowledge management (KM) strategy, knowledge management systems (KMS) help to manage scattered knowledge and promote knowledge innovation. However, KMS adoption is context-specific and depends on several factors. OBJECTIVE: This paper proposes a five-factor model and tests empirically the presence support and effectiveness of these factors, which are antecedent to KMS adoption. METHODS: The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in Ghana, was used as an illustrative case to test the applicability of the model. As regards the data analysis, we collected …data from teaching and non-teaching staff using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. We reviewed the extant literature thoroughly to explore the five factors to develop our conceptual model. The factors are management and leadership support (MaLS), knowledge sharing and transfer capability (KSaTC), support of knowledge architecture and infrastructure (SKAaI), knowledge innovation capability (KIC), and knowledge access control policy (KACP). RESULTS: Our study established that SKAaI has a positive and significant relationship with KSaTC, MaLS, and KACP. Also, MaLS correlated positively and significantly with KSaTC, while KSaTC has a significant direct relationship with KIC but an inverse relationship with KACP. Thus, this study is useful to both researchers and practitioners regarding a thorough examination of these factors. CONCLUSIONS: Practitioners and researchers must systematically examine these five factors concerning their extent of the impact, prioritization, and significant contribution to KM strategies. Abstract: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The quality of working life in healthcare settings deserves considerable attention due to the vital importance of services delivered in healthcare businesses and organizations, and the direct effect of the employees’ mental and physical health on the chance of medical errors and the quality of healthcare services. Accordingly, leisure time in the workplace and how workers spend their leisure time are significantly influential. PURPOSE: This mixed methods research aimed to develop a model for leisure time management for employees in a selected group of hospitals. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The exploratory sequential mixed methods design with …two phases was used. The qualitative part was based on grounded theory. Qualitative data were identified through 16 semi-structured interviews with selected academic experts and managers of selected hospitals in Shiraz, followed by coding process in three distinct stages. The results were the extraction and design of related categories in the form of causal condition, the central phenomenon, strategies, intervening conditions, contextual conditions, and consequences of employee leisure time management model. After identifying each of the selected template categories, each template element was selected and described in detail during the coding process. The qualitative results were tested in a quantitative section using a researcher-made questionnaire. To do so, 420 study participants were selected. Then, quantitative data and structural equation modeling were analyzed using inferential statistical methods and Amos 22 software, respectively. FINDINGS: Our qualitative data resulted in a conceptual model, design of related categories in the form of causal condition, the central phenomenon, strategies, intervening conditions, contextual conditions, and consequences of employee leisure time management. The quantitative results of the study indicated that the designed model was well fitted and finally confirmed. CONCLUSION: The results of this study reveal that hospital employees, especially therapeutic sections, need high-quality time for leisure and mental, spiritual and physical rest. Yet, time management should be based on special circumstances. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: In order to achieve sustainable and competitive advantages, enterprises must develop mainstream and new stream innovation simultaneously so as to achieve the short-term performance as well as the long-term competitive advantage. However, the funding and time resources owned by enterprises are often restricted, which make the tensions and competitive demands pervasive in the process of developing the mainstream and new stream innovation. Furthermore, the relationship between tensions and organizational innovation remains controversial and related empirical researches are rare. OBJECTIVE: Based on the paradox theory and ambidexterity innovation theory, we divide organizational innovation into mainstream- and new stream …innovation, aiming to discuss the different influences of experiencing tensions on the two different types of organizational innovation. In addition, we aimed to explore the role of leaders’ paradox mindset in the relationship of experiencing tension and mainstream- and new stream innovation. METHODS: Our research uses regression analysis to perform hypothesis testing. The survey data of 226 small and medium-sized enterprises are used to conduct empirical tests on the hypothesis proposed in our research. RESULTS: The results display that resource scarcity is the source of organizational tensions, and leaders’ paradox mindset moderate the effects experiencing tensions on mainstream- and new stream innovation and moderate the indirect effect of resource scarcity through tensions on mainstream- and new stream innovation. CONCLUSIONS: Organizations will encounter a lot of contradictions and competitive demands in the process of developing mainstream- and new stream innovation. Effective leaders must learn to get comfort from their discomfort and effectively manage tensions. This study promotes movement in this direction and contributes to the resolution of the paradox of organizational innovation. We hope that our research fuels additional investigations to uncover approaches to tensions. Show more

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The challenges of ever-changing technological and financial landscape call for experienced, open-minded and visionary SME managers to match the pace and be innovative to enhance firm competitive advantages. The challenges are even more rampant in Africa, characterized by noticeable technological and financial vulnerability demanding special attention. OBJECTIVE: This study focused on analyzing the impact of African SME use of ICT and the use of financial services on firm innovation performance. The study further, explore the mediating effect of firm manager’s experience on the firm use of ICT and financial services-innovation performance relationship. METHODS: Utilizing data …from the enterprise survey portal, a total of 11504 SMEs from 27 countries are involved in the analysis. The analysis employed multiple regression models using SPSS 23, and the mediation effect analysis employed the Sobel test of mediation. RESULTS: The general results indicate a significant association of firm use of ICT and financial services on its innovation performance, with exception of the variable of firm website ownership, which had an insignificant association with its ability to introduce new products/services. Also, the results depict the SME manager’s experience to significantly mediate the firm use of ICT and use of financial services-innovation performance relationship, but out of ten, only two models had an insignificant mediation effect of the manager’s experience on the firm having its own website-innovation performance relationship. CONCLUSION: The study results provide a profound impact of the relevant SME managerial experience on the ability to well manage the cotemporally dynamic resources like technology and finances for enhancing firm innovation which results in increased competitive advantage.
