Abstract: This paper presents a novel permanent-magnet rotor for surface permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSM). In order to achieve larger power of SPMSM in limited volume as small as possible, use of a high-magnetic flux condition in designing is investigated. To generate higher magnetic flux density in the air-gap, a new segment type permanent-magnet rotor is proposed. The magnetic characteristics are analysed in detail with the 2-D finite element method, and the calculated results are compared with the experimental results of the prototype machine. The results show that the peak flux density is doubled and the back-EMF becomes a nearly sinusoidal waveform.
