Abstract: Neurological and psychological conceptions of psychiatric disorder are in conflict at the present time. This conflict is considered in the context of the history of psychiatry and the philosophy of science. Its practical consequences are considered for the motor disorder of schizophrenia, the cognitive impairment in psychiatric illnesses, the use of the terms organic and functional and the association of neurological disorder with psychotic and neurotic disorders. The conflict is also examined in individual cases and the implications for treatment assessed.
Abstract: In this article, a computerized process control technique based on an artificial neural network (ANN) is presented. The process of concern is the wood dryer portion of an industrial retort used for the dehydration stage of wood waste pyrolysis. A standard backpropagation network structure is used to associate patterns of sensor readings with appropriate, heuristically determined control responses. As heuristic programming is employed, the dryer controller is similar to a typical knowledge base system, except that it is driven by an ANN rather than the more traditional rule base normally associated with expert system type applications.
Abstract: This study evaluated the relationship between employment status (i.e., part- and full-time) and job satisfaction, with the focus on the moderating roles of perceived injury risk and injury incidence. The results found that the level of job satisfaction for full-time workers was about the same regardless of the level of injury risk they perceived. In contrast, job satisfaction of part-time workers was significantly higher when they perceived low injury risk rather than high injury risk. The findings also supported the potential adverse impact of injury incidence and injury risk on job satisfaction for both part- and full-time workers. This study…highlighted the importance of understanding both workplace safety and job satisfaction when attempting to understand the differences between part-time and full-time workers.
