Abstract: BRAC University library (BRACU library) implemented a number of projects using open source software DSpace, Koha, VuFind, and Drupal, and several initiatives to meet the demand of the changing needs of teaching, learning, and research communities. This paper provides a summary of our experiences that focus on some of the key issues we have had to consider, the choices we made and the challenges we addressed during the implementation of the library technologies, and finally setting up a next-generation library. Abstract: This paper provides a comparative analysis of the functionality of three different Online Public Access Catalogues, i.e., LibSys, VTLS's iPortal, and Troodon ILMS acquired by study university libraries in Delhi with the help of a specially designed evaluation checklist. The various features of the OPACs in seven university libraries (University of Delhi, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi Technological University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Indira Gandhi National Open University, and Jamia Hamdard University) are evaluated. The evaluation approach taken was similar to that of Margam and Aggarwal with minor modifications. It comprises 214 dichotomous questions with 145 features …in 12 broad categories. The study explored different features of OPACs, of which page layout is the highest scored feature and Web 2.0 based OPAC feature is the lowest. Location map and series hyperlinks, meta-search, comprehensive search limits in publisher and place of publication, spell check software facility and additional help to remote users, image of book covers, relevancy ranking, reviews, user-added tags, tagging, RSS feed from the search, citation creator, customer written reviews “email this link”, etc., are some of the features lacking in all the surveyed OPACs. The highest scored OPAC is the LibSys-based OPAC of Jamia Hamdard University with 61.68 per cent and LibSys of Jamia Milia Islamia is the lowest scored with 41.58 per cent. The findings of the study prove to be a useful source of information to librarians, especially university librarians who are planning to introduce OPACs and also for the software vendors who wish to improve the functionality of their OPACs. Abstract: Open Courseware (OCW) is one of the www's indispensable tools which are highly useful for stakeholders. But the utility and visibility of such resources can increase manifolds if they are highly index-able and visible through search engines. This paper is an endeavour to assess format diversity, web traffic, and visibility of select OCW repositories. The work sheds light on retrieval efficiency of different search engines vis-à-vis OCW. Open Courseware repositories that were enlisted under science and Technological Subjects in ‘Catalogue of Open Courseware Consortium’ were sifted and selected after thorough review of their OA policies. Out of 20 repositories indentified …only 18 proved to be AO. A total of four repositories were short listed by way of random sampling for in-depth study in terms of their content diversity and visibility by prominent and special search engines (07). Among various formats, pdf is the most common format (52.31 per cent) archived by OCW repositories. OCW visibility differs from search engine. ‘Google’ turned to be most reliable tool by retrieving 73.58 per cent OCWs while ‘incywincy’ retrieved none. General search engines (73.58 per cent – 52.44 per cent) have shown very good performance compared to special search engines (42.68 per cent – 0 per cent). Among the repositories ‘Open Michigan’ is most visible Open Courseware repository with 70 per cent average visibility whereas ‘NJIT’ is least visible (29.82 per cent.) Show more

Abstract: Usage of electronic journal in an academic consortia environment provides an interesting result on the pattern of user's behaviour. The paper is an attempt to identify the pattern of user's downloading behaviour through COUNTER complain usage statistic 2011 by adopting Pareto 80/20 rule. UGC-Infonet consortium is UGC-INFLIBNET initiative that subscribes to 19 publishers of aggregators, society, and commercial publishers. The result of the study indicates that Pareto 80/20 rule applies to publishers whose journal bundles are more in number when individually publishers are analysed. But contrastingly, consolidated usage on all the journals when put together demonstrates a closer 80/20 pattern …of usage. Show more

Abstract: Name ambiguity in the context of bibliographic citation records is a hard problem that affects the quality of services and content in Digital Libraries (DL) and similar systems. The challenges of dealing with author name ambiguity have led to a myriad of disambiguation methods. This article presents three author name disambiguation methods, namely HHC, SAND, and INDi, and have presented some experimental results that show their effectiveness when compared to other methods proposed in the literature. HHC is a heuristic-based hierarchical clustering method that successively fuses clusters of citation records with similar author names based on a real-world heuristic applied …to their citation attributes (e.g., coauthor names, work title, and publication venue title). SAND is a three-step self-training method for author name disambiguation that requires no manual labelling and no parameterization. It is particularly suitable for situations in which only the most basic citation information is available. INDi is an unsupervized incremental method that aims to identify the correct authors of new citation records as they are inserted in a DL, thus avoiding the drawback of getting it duplicated every time it is updated. These three methods have a common characteristic that they do not require any training and use only the most basic information available in a citation record (i.e., author names, work, and venue titles), thus making them more suitable for the name disambiguation task. Other methods generally require either a training phase to learn a disambiguation model or additional information to help the disambiguation process. Show more
