Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation will provide a forum for discussion and dissemination of information about the major areas that constitute vocational rehabilitation.
Periodically, there will be topics that are directed either to specific themes such as long-term care or different disability groups such as those with psychiatric impairment. Often a guest editor who is an expert in the given area will provide leadership on a specific topic issue. However, all articles received directly or submitted for a special issue are welcome for peer review. The emphasis will be on publishing rehabilitation articles that have immediate application for helping rehabilitation counselors, psychologists and other professionals in providing direct services to people with disabilities.
Original research articles, review articles, program descriptions, and case studies will be considered for publication. Ideas for special topical issues are welcomed as well.
Abstract: This study shows the results obtained after developing and applying a vocational evaluation and guidance program to a sample of persons with physical and sensory disabilities from a center of vocational rehabilitation. The participants were 84 students: 56 in the experimental group and 28 in the control group. The program, lasting 27 h, included information to enhance self-awareness and knowledge of the labor world, and training in employment-seeking strategies. Pre- and post-test measurements were taken by means of three employability maturity evaluation instruments and a self-image evaluation instrument. Results show significant improvements in professional and personal identity (i.e. abilities, interest…and need awareness), together with employment seeking skills. Finally, conclusions and suggestions for further research are presented.
Abstract: We describe in this paper: (a) how the INCLUSIÓ project started; (b) what the Inclusion Continuous Quality Improvement evaluation system is and how it was applied to our project; (c) what kind of qualitative and quantitative information the system allowed to collect; and (d) the impact that carrying out this evaluation system had on the project. Three main conclusions are pointed out at the end of the paper: first of all, ICQI evaluation seems to be a powerful tool for empowering consumers. Secondly, more research about natural support is required to enhance any supported employment project. Finally, we think that…not only the procedure but the underlying philosophy of the ICQI system has been adopted by the project and that this is a good way for improving the quality of life of supported employment project consumers.

Abstract: In this paper the principles, methodology and results obtained after 3 years of multidisciplinary intervention in a vocational rehabilitation (VR) program, CENDI, aimed at promoting the employment of people with physical and/or sensory disabilities in the open labor market in the province of Vizcaya (Spain) are presented. CENDI employment service provision has allowed for formulas to be explored from a multidimensional perspective combining: (1) intervention with disabled candidates along their job seeking process; (2) vocational training in market-demanded areas; and (3) mediation activities in direct contact with employers, job finding and job matching in response to the enterprise needs. This…paper will focus on the importance of mediation actions, marketing and job finding activities, as key elements that come to complement the traditional users-centered assessment and guidance services. It will also reflect on the barriers and challenges found, and the evidence of the importance of involving the employers as active agents in VR and exploring their role in providing employment for people with disabilities.

Abstract: The present study was aimed at assessing the point-prevalence of psychiatric disorders (DSM-III-R) in individuals with mental retardation (MR) working in a vocational setting. The study was conducted at a vocational centre in southern Spain that is considered a model for social integration. One hundred and thirty workers with MR were interviewed by two experienced clinicians using the Assessment and Information Rating Profile (AIRP). Forty-two (32.3%) subjects had a psychiatric diagnosis, with the following distribution: schizophrenia (17.7%), other psychotic disorders (9.23%), mood disorders (4.61%), adjustment disorders (2.31%), anxiety disorders (1.54%) and other psychiatric disorders (6.15%). Treatment was considered inadequate in…30% of these cases. The prevalence of psychiatric disorders was similar to that found in structured healthcare environments. This finding highlights the need for specific psychiatric assessment in MR in vocational programmes.
Abstract: Though ‘Supported Employment’ in Spain has followed advances made in the field, in the United States and other European countries, legislation as well as change in Spain has been important. Thus ‘Supported Employment’ has become increasingly consolidated in the country. Twenty-four programmes are in place and almost 800 persons are involved. Different initiatives, such as that developed in Mallorca through the programme ‘Treball amb Suport’ (‘Work with Support’) or the one in Malaga ‘Transición a través de la Inclusión’ (‘Transition through Inclusion’) are good examples. The Spanish Association of Supported Employment (‘Asociación Española de Supported Employment, AESE) has provided the…necessary framework for development and implementation discussions in Spain. Although there are problems currently affecting the field, such as the the lack of systematic programme evaluation, pertinent legislation, and difficulties regarding funding problems, ‘Supported Employment’ will continue to grow.
