Abstract: Media is considered as the fourth pillar of democracy and one of the most effective agents of information dissemination. Media is changing its form, at the same time, expanding its influence on the society. Awareness plays an important role in the moulding mindset, attitude, and behaviour of the human being in the society. Success of both planned and unplanned development depends on the understanding and awareness of citizens of a nation or world. Therefore, awareness is required among people. To make people aware, education is one of the mediums. Education and awareness can be spread through social media. Hence, social media can be regarded as a powerful instrument of social change. At present, social media gains its importance on one side and poses serious challenges before the society on the other side. On one hand, social media is becoming very useful and productive; on the other hand; level of depression and aloofness is increasing in the society. In this situation, study of social media and its role in the life of human beings is very significant and this requires intensive observation. Before the use of social media, library as an institution had played a crucial role in sharing the knowledge in the society. Changing nature of society increases the use of social media in the library and educational system. This article is an attempt to discuss the role of social media in human life and its impact on Indian society.
