Abstract: History is an important aspect of all our lives, national history, family history, etc. The history/roots of our profession are important, not just to the present generation, but to future generations. It is important to document the early years, to know where we came from. It is only in this context that we can evaluate where we are and where we are (should be) going. What follows is an effort to document the first 25 years of the education of speech and language therapists in Ireland.

Abstract: This paper describes a pilot study of a therapy programme aimed at remediating unintelligible speech in young children with Down Syndrome. The programme utilised amplification and structured exposure to the contrastive values of phonemes in an attempt to encourage experimentation and promote change. The results obtained with six children indicated that major restructuring occurred in their phonological systems within short time spans and that the increased intelligibility facilitated growth in expressive syntax.

Abstract: A group approach to the management of dysphonia has been adopted in the Speech and Language Department of a Community Care Clinic. This paper outlines the rationale, format and results to-date. A group approach, where a supportive atmosphere exists has been found to facilitate change and is an effective means of working on such areas as relaxation, breathing and reduction of vocal abuse.

Abstract: Facilitated communication is an approach to communication therapy which has received widespread media coverage in the United States. Interest in this approach is now growing in the United Kingdom. Facilitated communication involves a communication partner helping a communication aid user to overcome physical and emotional problems in using their aid, by providing physical assistance. Some issues and concerns surrounding this technique are outlined.
