Abstract: In recent years self-employment has increasingly been recognized as a viable employment option for individuals with disabilities, including individuals with mental retardation or other cognitive disabilities. Eight business owners with cognitive disabilities and those most directly involved in providing support to them were interviewed using qualitative research methods. The purpose of the study was to explore the meaning of self-employment for the business owners, to understand the structure, function and viability of the businesses, and to examine the types and sources of support provided. Findings and recommendations for enhancing the use of this employment option are presented.
