Abstract: The present paper looks at the changing picture presented by children with specific language impairment (SLI), from preschool to the early school years, with particular emphasis on 7 year olds. It appears that children with SLI have difficulties as infants in school with all the core subjects: English, Maths and Science. In addition, the question of the possible integration of these children to the mainstream is raised and discussed in light of current evidence.
