Abstract: The Linked Dataset special issue gathers descriptions of mature and useful datasets thereby awarding researchers and practitioners who create and maintain those datasets with academic recognition. In this editorial, we briefly summarise the contributions to the 2nd special issue on Linked Dataset Descriptions at the Semantic Web Journal.

Abstract: As statistical data is inherently highly structured and comes with rich metadata (in form of code lists, data cubes etc.), it would be a missed opportunity to not tap into it from the Linked Data angle. At the time of this writing, there exists no simple way to transform statistical data into Linked Data since the raw data comes in different shapes and forms. Given that SDMX (Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange) is arguably the most widely used standard for statistical data exchange, a great amount of statistical data about our societies is yet to be discoverable and identifiable in …a uniform way. Abstract: AGRIS is among the most comprehensive online collections of agricultural and related sciences information. It is a growing global catalog of 5 million high-quality structured bibliographic records indexed from a worldwide group of providers. AGRIS relies heavily on the AGROVOC thesaurus for its indexing. Following the conversion of that thesaurus into a SKOS concept-scheme and its publication as Linked Open Data (LOD), the entire set of AGRIS records was also triplified and released as LOD. As part of this exercise, OpenAGRIS, a semantic mashup application, was developed to dynamically combine AGRIS data with external data sources, using a mixture of …SPARQL queries and web services. The re-engineering of AGRIS for the Semantic Web raised numerous issues regarding the relative lack of administrative metadata required to compellingly address the proof and trust layers of the Semantic Web stack, both within the AGRIS repository and in the external data pulled into OpenAGRIS. The AGRIS team began a process of disambiguation and enrichment to continue moving toward an entity-based view of its resources, beginning with the tens of thousands of journals attached to its records. The evolution of the system, the issues raised during the triplification process and the steps necessary for publishing the result as LOD content are hereby discussed and evaluated. Show more

Abstract: The Urbanopoly datasets contain the results of a data curation campaign on available geospatial open datasets like OpenStreetMap. The curation effort is conducted through a location-based Game with a Purpose inspired by the monopoly board game. The paper describes the generated datasets: we illustrate the genesis and life-cycle of Urbanopoly data; we explain the modelling choices by introducing the provenance-based Human Computation ontology and by giving examples of the datasets' content; we describe the datasets' publication on the Web as Linked Data and the cross-links to the curated datasets; finally, we indicate the envisioned uses of the datasets as well …as their possible re-uses. Abstract: The dataset presented in this paper constitutes one of the outcomes of RÉPENER, a research project co-funded by the Spanish National RDI plan. It contains integrated information of the Spanish territory regarding energy certification, building monitoring, and geographical data. The integration has been carried out by means of semantic technologies. The adherence to the Linked Data principles guarantees the application of standard methods of accessing data as well as the links to the existing dataset on the Web of Data. Abstract: neXtProt provides a comprehensive knowledgebase on human proteins complemented by an extensive cross incorporation of annotations from many databases. With the diversity of published data, provenance information becomes critical to providing reliable and trustworthy services to scientists, thus the tracking of provenance in open, decentralized systems is especially important. Since the nanopublication system addresses many of these challenges, we have developed the neXtProt Linked Data by serializing in RDF/XML annotations specific to neXtProt and started employing the nanopublication model to give appropriate attribution to all data. Specifically, a use case demonstrates the handling of post-translational modification (PTM) data modeled as …nanopublications to illustrate how the different levels of provenance and data quality thresholds can be captured in this model. Abstract: The Public Spending (PS) project is the first attempt to generate, curate, interlink and distribute daily updated public spending data in LOD formats that can be useful to both expert (i.e. scientists and professionals) and naïve users. The PS ontology is based on the UK payments ontology and reuses, among others, the W3C Registered Organization Vocabulary and the Core Business Vocabulary. RDFized data are linked to product classifications, Geonames and DBpedia resources. Online services contain advanced search features and domain level information (e.g. local government), simple and complex visualizations based on network analysis, linked information about payment entities and SPARQL …endpoints. Abstract: The DBpedia community project extracts structured, multilingual knowledge from Wikipedia and makes it freely available on the Web using Semantic Web and Linked Data technologies. The project extracts knowledge from 111 different language editions of Wikipedia. The largest DBpedia knowledge base which is extracted from the English edition of Wikipedia consists of over 400 million facts that describe 3.7 million things. The DBpedia knowledge bases that are extracted from the other 110 Wikipedia editions together consist of 1.46 billion facts and describe 10 million additional things. The DBpedia project maps Wikipedia infoboxes from 27 different language editions to a single …shared ontology consisting of 320 classes and 1,650 properties. The mappings are created via a world-wide crowd-sourcing effort and enable knowledge from the different Wikipedia editions to be combined. The project publishes releases of all DBpedia knowledge bases for download and provides SPARQL query access to 14 out of the 111 language editions via a global network of local DBpedia chapters. In addition to the regular releases, the project maintains a live knowledge base which is updated whenever a page in Wikipedia changes. DBpedia sets 27 million RDF links pointing into over 30 external data sources and thus enables data from these sources to be used together with DBpedia data. Several hundred data sets on the Web publish RDF links pointing to DBpedia themselves and make DBpedia one of the central interlinking hubs in the Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud. Abstract: We draw on our experience of implementing a semi-automated guesstimation application of the Semantic Web, , to draw four lessons, which we claim are of general applicability. These are: 1. Inference can unleash the Semantic Web: The full power of the web will only be realised when we can use it to infer new knowledge from old. 2. The Semantic Web does not constrain the inference mechanisms: Since we must anyway curate the knowledge we extract from the web, we can take the opportunity to translate it into what ever representational formalism is most appropriate for our application. …This also enables the use of whatever inference mechanism is most appropriate. 3. Curation must be dynamic: Static curation is not only infeasible due to the size and growth rate of the Semantic Web, but curation must be application-specific. 4. Own up to uncertainty: Since the Semantic Web is, by design, uncontrolled, the accuracy of knowledge extracted from it cannot be guaranteed. The resulting uncertainty must not be hidden from the user, but must be made manifest. Show more
