Abstract: This paper intends to provide an analytical overview of the research performed in the domain of computer Go. Domain knowledge that is essential to Go-playing programs is identified. Various computation and search techniques that can be used effectively to obtain helpful domain knowledge are presented. Four different move-decision paradigms applied by today’s leading Go programs are discussed. Conclusions are drawn and two proposals of improvements to current move-decision paradigms are presented.

Abstract: This paper considers an online interpretation problem related to chess articles containing annotated chess games, published in online newspapers/magazines and chess-based web sites. The formats of most articles examined by the author were rigorous in the sense that a software program could be constructed to play the moves of the annotated games and the moves of the variations given in the articles on online chessboards. The author presents some results based on a preliminary version of a software program that interprets ‘well- formed’ chess articles. He argues that this type of interpreter should be a feasible alternative to conversion utilities …such as PGN-file constructors/readers that are otherwise required to build/interpret these columns. Abstract: This note reports the combined results of several initiatives in creating and surveying complete suites of endgame tables (EGTs) to the Depth to Mate (DTM) and Depth to Conversion (DTC) metrics. Data on percentage results, maximals and mutual zugzwangs, mzugs , has been filed and made available on the web, as have the DTM EGTs.

Abstract: The note describes the development of AND/OR-tree search algorithms in the mating search of shogi. Originally depth-first algorithms are successfully transformed in best-first algorithms, such as PN*, PDS, and df-pn. Each of these algorithms aims at solving hard tsume-shogi problems. The algorithms can be characterized as variants of proof-number search. We note that PN* only uses proof numbers, while PDS and df-pn uses both proof numbers and disproof numbers. The df-pn search behaviour is similar to proof-number search’s behaviour. Recently, the strong shogi programs have come to apply these algorithms in their tournament versions and are now able to find …relatively long-step mating sequences in a short time. Show more
