The Importance of Language and Cognition in the Management of Feeding/Swallowing Disorders

Abstract: Children and adults with feeding and swallowing problems and language disorders present a particular challenge to the speech-language pathologist. Many cognitive and language skills are required to be able to self-feed safely and to benefit from optimal procedures for evaluation and treatment of a swallowing disorder. This manuscript examines the role of language and cognition in normal eating behaviour and the ways in which impairment in these areas affects selection of diagnostic and treatment procedures. Suggestions for management are also provided.
