Note: [1] This is a revised version of the paper presented to the Siena Group Seminar in Oslo, June 1995.
Abstract: The current paper is a statistical profile of youth in the European and North American region which gives insight into several areas of concern for social monitoring of the situation of young people, the topic of the second Siena Group meeting. The main aspects and trends in the socio-demographic and labour market situation of young persons in this region are highlighted through a series of charts and tables which give the general picture against which the situation of each country can be assessed. The analysis is divided into 5 parts covering selected areas, namely, i) youth as a resource; ii) education; iii) labour force entrance and exclusion; iv) health and health behaviour; and v) young people and the law. The choice of these specific areas was mainly determined by the availability of international statistical data. A number of important areas for policies on youth are not covered due to lack of data.
