Abstract: Modern technology and methodologies were used in the second General Census of Population, Housing and Establishments conducted in 2003 in the Sultanate of Oman. Various techniques were employed like satellites images, GRS, GPS, Internet and Intranet, communication devices and most importantly hand-held devices. These techniques were applied in a variety of ways and areas. Mapping, organizing and managing the field operations of the census and the communication with the staff and monitoring their performance were among the most prominent applications. However, the most distinguished feature of this Census was the use of hand-held devices (HHD). The HHD were used for data collection in Muscat Governorate. Some problems were encountered while using them due to the device itself like short life span of batteries and screen non-response to repeated stylus taps. Other problems were related to the programming. One of the main problems encountered was the prolonged classifications such as occupation and industrial classification which was overcome by preparing a short list allowing easier selection or by entering the occupation in case it was not on the list. Despite the problems encountered in using HHD, other ministries in Oman were encouraged to apply this technology when conducting future studies.
