Abstract: Statistics New Zealand produces a lot of data about places. Place puts
location at the core of statistical production, whether its data about
a neighbourhood, a regional government area or the entire country. Modern
geospatial technology is providing new ways to collect, analyse and present
statistical data. It can also help reduce the cost of collecting and
processing the statistics. The efforts of the international community are
helping change the way New Zealand delivers statistics and helps Statistics
NZ lead national programmes to improve the data ecosystem. This will help
Statistics NZ achieve its vision to ``unleash the power of data to change
lives'' and spatially enabling statistical data is key. This paper outlines
the story so far, the challenges and where to from here.
