Abstract: SBA-15 surface was modified with a silane reagent then coupled to EDTA. Sm3+ ions were coordinated to the surface of the material through the EDTA groups. The Sm-EDTA-(SBA-15) composite materials was luminescent. The EDTA enhanced the energy-transfer efficiency of the triplet level of ligands to the 4f electron of Sm3+ ion, and enhanced the luminescence intensity of the Sm3+ ion. The Sm3+ was grafted on the surface of SBA-15 porous and may be shielded from the environment. This reduced the probability of coordination of the Sm ion by water. As a result, the temperature quenching effect was suppressed and the energy-transfer efficiency was increased. These factors made the Sm-EDTA-(SBA-15) materials have much higher relative luminescent intensities.
