Abstract: The Commonwealth of Virginia is one of 31 Tech Act states funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) under the Technology Related Assistance Act to Individuals with Disabilities (PL 100-407). The development of the Virginia Assistive Technology System is led by the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS) in cooperation with consumer advocacy organizations, Virginia state agencies, and other public and private organizations. The purpose of the .lystem is to increase the availability of technology to Virginians of all ages who could benefit from assistive technology. As part of the Virginia Assistive Technology System, in October of 1991 the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (RRTC) at Virginia Commonwealth University conducted a technical assistance needs assessment survey to obtain a measure of problem areas and needs for technical assistance as related to assistive technology. The results were twofold; the study (1) provided clear indicators of technical assistance needs and (2) delineated regional requirements that differed markedly by locale.
