The Focussing Monochromator of IN4C

Abstract: The new version of the time of flight spectrometer IN4 to be installed at ILL has been designed in order to obtain a very high intensity at the sample position and good performances in terms of momentum and energy resolution. The increase of flux at the sample as well as the control of the time-focussing conditions are obtained using a large area (440 cm2) variable curvature monochromator consisting of 55 individual crystals of 2 × 4 cm2. Both the horizontal and vertical radii of curvature are independently and continuously adjustable from R = 1 m to infiity. The monochromator has four faces to allow a ready change of the monochromating crystals and all the movements are computer controlled. This monochromator provides notable increase of flux estimated by simulation to be up to a factor of ten in normal operation conditions.
