Abstract: This paper describes the scintillators in common use for the detection of thermal neutrons and the advantages of using scintillator technology in the design of neutron detectors. Characteristics obtained in recent detectors incorporating these scintillators are given together with proposals for new scintillator detectors under development at ISIS. Desired characteristics of new scintillators for use in neutron detectors at both ISIS and new accelerator sources are defined.
