Abstract: The behaviour of neutrons in a double elliptical guide system is analysed in terms of expected garland, zigzag and point-to-point reflections. From this simple approach, predictions can be made for the beam properties at the focus position and interesting conclusions can be drawn for the necessary guide coating. Analytical results were confirmed by detailed Monte Carlo simulations using the simulation package VITESS.
