Abstract: Conventional control depends on the mathematical model of the shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator being controlled. When this model is uncertain, intelligent controllers, like fuzzy logic controllers (FLC) promise better performance. This paper presents an experimental investigation of position control of a shape memory alloy wire actuator with fuzzy, fuzzy-GSPI (fuzzy gain scheduled proportional integral), fuzzy-PWM (fuzzy pulse width modulation) and fuzzy GSPI-PWM controllers. The performance of the controllers is experimentally evaluated with and without thermal disturbance. The results demonstrates that the performance of fuzzy GSPI-PWM surpass fuzzy, fuzzy-GSPI, fuzzy-PWM.
