Abstract: A new Intelligent Design Framework (IDF) approach that leverages Knowledge-Based Engineering (KBE) techniques for Optical Backplane engineering is proposed leveraging axiomatic design principles and Semantic Web technology. The framework enables the development of KBE systems for improving engineering design and processes utilizing intelligent systems coupled to Web Services. As a proof-of-concept, a prototype KBE system using HP Labs Jena 2 will be built to demonstrate the IDF approach for optical backplane engineering.
