Abstract: The hybrid adaptive cross approximation (ACA) algorithm with fast dipole method (FDM) (ACA-FDM) combines characteristic basis function method (CBFM) to solve the electromagnetic scattering from perfect electric conducting targets is presented in this paper. In the conventional FDM-CBFM, the FDM is employed to reduce the complexity of matrix-vector products (MVPs) and vector-matrix-vector products (VMVPs) between the far-group pairs, but the calculation of submatrices related to the interactions of the near-group pairs is increased when the criterion for the far-group pairs becomes stricter in order to obtain relatively high accurate solutions. To mitigate this problem, the ACA algorithm is employed to deal with the near-group pairs. Compared with the conventional FDM-CBFM, the submatrices related to the interactions of the near-group pairs are efficiently compressed by the ACA, so it can efficiently calculate the MVPs and VMVPs between the near-group pairs. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the ACA-FDM-CBFM.
