Preface

1.This thematic issue

This issue of JAISE is focused on the theme of Human-Centric Computing and Intelligent Environments. As humans, our daily lives should benefit from computing machines of various forms that are expected to ubiquitously surround us. From several perspectives, computing-capable machines should increase our comfort, and should even care for us.

Human-Centric Computing comprises exciting challenges and open issues in several areas that have attracted the attention of a broad spectrum of researchers over the years. This Thematic Issue offers a vision on the state-of-the-art advances in crucial areas such as human activity recognition, event detection, elderly assistance, and securing the involved data. As we are still probably at the beginning of a long journey in Human-Centric Computing, we hope you feel inspired by the work selected in this issue of JAISE to bring about progress in the topic.

We wish to thank our colleagues Gordon Hunter (Kingston University, UK), Raúl Herrera (Universidad de Tarapacá, Chile) and Tiina Kymäläinen (VTT Technical Research Centre, Tampere, Finland) for organizing the content of this issue. The editors have ample research experience in the area of human-centric intelligent environments, and they have been behind the organization of several Intelligent Environments conferences, as well as previous JAISE Thematic Issues.
